1 Kings 4:10

The son of Hesed, in Aruboth; to him pertained Sochoh, and all the land of Hepher:

1 Kings 4:10 (KJV)

This verse names the son of Hesed, also called Ben-Hesed, one of twelve district governors appointed by King Solomon. His district included Aruboth, Sochoh, and all the land of Hepher. Aruboth is not mentioned elsewhere in Scripture, so its exact location is uncertain. Sochoh may be modern Tell er-Ras or ‘Arrabeh, and Hepher lay in Manasseh, possibly about nine miles north of Samaria.

These governors supplied provisions for the royal household, each for one month of the year. This record shows the order and structure of Solomon’s kingdom, preserving even minor administrative details. The careful listing of names and territories demonstrates that God values faithful service in small matters.

The verse highlights Solomon’s wisdom in governance. He did not rule alone but delegated authority to capable men, ensuring that the kingdom was well managed and the people’s needs were met. The son of Hesed was one of these trusted officers, and his appointment shows the importance of reliable leadership.

This administrative list reflects the wisdom God gave Solomon, as seen in 1 Kings 3:28, where all Israel feared the king because they saw divine wisdom in his judgments. Orderly governance was part of Israel’s covenant life, and it pointed to the peace and prosperity of Solomon’s reign.

We can learn the value of wise leadership and delegation. Solomon trusted others with real responsibility, and we too should surround ourselves with competent people and empower them. Organisation and teamwork are not unspiritual; they help God’s work move forward.

Even unnamed servants like the son of Hesed had a vital role. God notices faithful work done quietly behind the scenes. Our service, however small, contributes to a larger purpose and is honoured by Him.
