1 Kings 5:6

Now therefore command thou that they hew me cedar trees out of Lebanon; and my servants shall be with thy servants: and unto thee will I give hire for thy servants according to all that thou shalt appoint: for thou knowest that there is not among us any that can skill to hew timber like unto the Sidonians.

1 Kings 5:6 (KJV)

This verse is part of the account of King Solomon preparing to build the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem. Solomon sends a message to Hiram, king of Tyre, asking for cedar trees from Lebanon. The request is practical and diplomatic, showing wisdom in securing the best materials and workers for God’s house. Cedar wood was valued for its durability, fragrance, and resistance to decay.

Solomon asks Hiram to command his servants to cut cedar trees. He promises that his own servants will work alongside Hiram’s, and he will pay whatever wages Hiram sets. Solomon openly admits that the Israelites do not have anyone with the skill to cut timber like the Sidonians. This honesty shows humility and good judgment. He does not pretend to have abilities he lacks, nor does he try to do the work alone. Instead, he proposes a cooperative arrangement that honors the skills of others and ensures fair compensation.

Using cedar for the temple showed Solomon’s commitment to building a lasting and beautiful house for the Lord. Later, Hiram supplied both trees and men, as recorded in 1 Kings 5:10. This cooperation was part of God’s providential provision for the temple. God used the skills of the Sidonians and the resources of Tyre to accomplish His purposes, showing that He often provides through the abilities and contributions of different people.

Solomon recognized the skills of others and did not try to do everything alone. He sought help from Hiram and offered fair payment. This teaches us the value of humility and collaboration. We should acknowledge our limitations and be willing to work with others who have different gifts. Honoring the abilities God gives to different people is part of serving Him well. When we work together with mutual respect and fairness, we reflect the wisdom seen in this verse.

  • Admit what you cannot do well, and seek help from those who can.

  • Offer fair compensation and respect for the work of others.

  • Use your own skills for God’s glory, and value the skills of others.

The temple was to be a place of worship and reverence, deserving the finest materials and workmanship. Solomon’s careful planning reminds us that our service to God should also be marked by excellence and dedication. When we use our skills for His glory and work together in mutual respect, we reflect the wisdom and generosity seen in this verse. God calls us to give Him our best, and He often provides what we need through the gifts of others.
