1 Kings 5:5
And, behold, I purpose to build an house unto the name of the Lord my God, as the Lord spake unto David my father, saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy room, he shall build an house unto my name.
1 Kings 5:5 (KJV)
Context
Solomon speaks these words while preparing to build the temple in Jerusalem. He sends word to Hiram, king of Tyre, to request materials for the work. The surrounding passage explains that David could not build the temple because of the wars around him, but God has now given Solomon rest on every side. This peace makes the construction possible.
Meaning
Solomon says, “I purpose to build an house unto the name of the Lord my God.” The phrase “unto the name of the Lord” shows that the temple is dedicated to God’s honor and glory. It is not a monument to Solomon’s own achievement. He also recalls the promise God made to David: that David’s son would build a house for God’s name. Solomon understands his work as the fulfillment of that promise.
Biblical connections
God first spoke this promise to David in 2 Samuel 7:12-13, where He said that David’s offspring would build a house for His name. The same promise is repeated in 1 Chronicles 17:11-12. David himself desired to build the temple, but God appointed Solomon for the task. This shows that God’s purposes are fulfilled in His timing and through His chosen instruments.
Application
Solomon’s example teaches believers to align their actions with God’s revealed will. He did not act on personal ambition alone; he responded to what God had spoken. When God gives a promise or a task, His people can move forward with confidence, even when the work is great. Obedience to God’s Word brings honor to His name.
Reflection
The temple was a central place of worship, representing God’s presence among His people. Solomon’s reverence for God’s name reminds us that all true worship is directed to God alone. As believers, we are called to give glory to God in our own lives, trusting that He is faithful to fulfill every promise He has made.
