1 Kings 6:6
The nethermost chamber was five cubits broad, and the middle was six cubits broad, and the third was seven cubits broad: for without in the wall of the house he made narrowed rests round about, that the beams should not be fastened in the walls of the house.
1 Kings 6:6 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the detailed account of Solomon building the temple in Jerusalem. The temple was the central place where Israel worshipped God, and its construction showed great care and order. Here the writer describes the side chambers attached to the temple building.
Meaning
The verse names three levels of chambers: the lowest, the middle, and the third. The lowest was five cubits wide, the middle six, and the third seven. A cubit was about eighteen inches, the length from a person’s elbow to the tip of the middle finger. The chambers grew wider as they rose.
The key detail is that the beams were not fastened into the temple walls. Instead, the walls had narrowed rests, or ledges, on the outside. These ledges supported the beams, so the chambers did not cut into the sacred walls. This design protected the temple structure and kept the chambers secure.
Biblical connections
The same kind of side chambers appears in Ezekiel 41:5-6, where the temple vision also describes chambers built against the wall with increasing width. This shows that the design was not accidental but followed a careful pattern. The temple was a place where God promised to dwell among His people, so every part of it mattered.
Application
This verse teaches that even small details deserve wisdom and foresight. Solomon did not simply attach beams to the walls; he planned supports that would not harm the building. In our lives, we can also build carefully. When we add new activities, relationships, or responsibilities, we should make sure they do not damage what is foundational, such as our faith and our commitment to God.
The increasing width of the chambers also reminds us that growth can be steady and orderly. Each level was wider than the one below, yet all rested safely on the ledges. We can grow in knowledge, service, and love without weakening our spiritual foundation.
Reflection
God cares about the details of worship and service. The temple was built with precision because it was His dwelling place. Our lives are also places where God dwells through His Spirit. We can honor Him by doing our work with care, integrity, and attention to what is right. Faithful work, even in hidden places, brings glory to God.
