1 Kings 8:8
And they drew out the staves, that the ends of the staves were seen out in the holy place before the oracle, and they were not seen without: and there they are unto this day.
1 Kings 8:8 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the dedication of Solomon’s temple in Jerusalem. The priests had just brought the Ark of the Covenant into the Most Holy Place. The Ark was the sacred chest that held the tablets of the Ten Commandments and symbolized God’s covenant and His presence among Israel.
Meaning
The staves were the poles used to carry the Ark. They were drawn out so that their ends could be seen from the holy place before the oracle, yet they were not visible outside the temple. This detail shows that the Ark had found a permanent resting place, no longer needing to be transported. The visible ends from the inner sanctuary, contrasted with their hidden view from outside, emphasize the separation between the sacred and the profane and call for reverence toward God’s presence.
The text notes that the staves remained there “unto this day,” indicating that at the time of writing the Ark and its poles were still in place, serving as a lasting testimony to God’s ongoing presence among His people. The staves were not removed entirely, as that would have violated Exodus 25:15, which required the staves to remain in the rings of the Ark.
Biblical connections
The drawing out of the staves marks the transition from the wilderness wanderings to a settled dwelling place for God’s presence. The Ark’s resting place prefigures the rest that believers find in Christ, who is the true mercy seat. The permanence of the staves “unto this day” serves as a historical marker of the temple’s establishment and underscores the faithfulness of God to His promises.
Application
Though the physical temple and the Ark belong to the Old Testament era, the verse teaches timeless spiritual principles. It reminds believers to recognize God’s holiness and presence in their lives, to approach Him with reverence and respect, and to understand that He is set apart from the world. Honouring God’s holiness fosters awe and reverence in worship.
Reflection
The careful attention to the staves’ position teaches the importance of reverence and order in worship, as God’s instructions were followed precisely. This verse invites reflection on the accessibility of God’s presence through Christ, who opened the way into the Holy of Holies, while also reminding us of the awe and reverence due to His holiness.
