1 Kings 9:2

That the Lord appeared to Solomon the second time, as he had appeared unto him at Gibeon.

1 Kings 9:2 (KJV)

This verse comes after Solomon finished building the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem. In 1 Kings 8, Solomon dedicated the temple and prayed to God. The Lord answered that prayer by appearing to Solomon a second time. The first appearance happened at Gibeon, where God spoke to Solomon in a dream and asked what he desired. Solomon asked for wisdom to govern God’s people, and God was pleased, granting him wisdom, wealth, and honour (1 Kings 3:5-15).

The phrase “the second time” shows that God continued to communicate with Solomon after the temple was built. This was not a random event; it was a direct response to Solomon’s dedication and prayer. The reference to Gibeon reminds us that God is the same God who met Solomon before. He does not change, and He keeps His promises. The second appearance also confirms that the temple was the place of God’s presence among His people. This appearance is not a mere repetition but a further step in God’s relationship with Solomon, affirming His presence and response.

In the following verses of 1 Kings 9, God speaks to Solomon and makes a covenant with him. God promises to establish Solomon’s throne forever if he walks in obedience, but warns of consequences if he turns away. This shows that God’s promises are conditional on faithfulness. The second appearance sets the stage for that covenant, linking Solomon’s obedience in building the temple with God’s continued guidance. Divine appearances are tied to significant moments in redemptive history, such as the temple’s completion.

We can learn from Solomon’s example. He dedicated his work to God and sought His guidance. When we complete tasks or reach goals, we should also dedicate them to the Lord, asking for His wisdom. God sees our sincere efforts and responds to those who seek Him. The verse also reminds us to remember God’s past faithfulness. Just as Gibeon reminded Solomon of God’s earlier promise, we can look back at how God has helped us before and trust Him for the future. God’s presence is not limited to one place or time; He continues to reveal Himself to those who seek Him.

God is not distant or silent. He speaks to His people at important moments and continues to reveal Himself to those who follow Him. This verse encourages us to remain faithful, knowing that God honours His covenant and desires a personal relationship with us. We can trust that He will guide us when we sincerely dedicate our lives to Him.
