1 Kings 18 recounts the dramatic showdown between the prophet Elijah and the prophets of the false god Baal. At the time, Israel was in a period of spiritual decline, with many people worshiping idols. Elijah confronts King Ahab and proposes a test to determine who the true God is.
The test takes place on Mount Carmel, where Elijah challenges the prophets of Baal to prepare a sacrifice and call upon their god to consume it with fire. Despite their fervent prayers and rituals, Baal remains silent and their sacrifice is untouched. In contrast, Elijah repairs the altar of the Lord, douses his sacrifice with water three times, and prays to God. In a remarkable display of divine power, fire descends from heaven, consuming the sacrifice, the altar, and even the water around it.
Witnessing this miraculous event, the people of Israel recognize the power of the true God and declare their allegiance to Him. Elijah seizes the opportunity to lead the people in executing the false prophets of Baal. He then prays for rain to end the severe drought that had plagued the land, and after persistent prayer, a rainstorm finally arrives.
