1 Peter 4:1

“Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;”

Christ’s Suffering

Peter has just presented Christ as the righteous One who suffered for sins and brought believers to God. Because Christ suffered in the flesh, Christians are commanded to arm themselves with the same mind—a settled willingness to obey God even when obedience brings pain.

Arm Yourselves with the Same Mind

The military image describes deliberate spiritual preparation. Holiness is not maintained accidentally. Believers must adopt Christ’s resolve, rejecting the assumption that comfort or social approval is the highest good. His faithful endurance supplies both the pattern and the ground of their courage.

Ceased from Sin

The phrase does not claim that a suffering Christian has attained sinless perfection. In context, it describes a decisive break with the former rule of sinful desires. The person prepared to suffer rather than return to sin demonstrates that the old way of life no longer governs the will.

Application

Followers of Christ should decide beforehand that obedience is worth its cost. Such resolve grows through prayer, Scripture, fellowship, and remembrance of Christ’s sufferings. Trials do not automatically make anyone holy, but they can expose loyalties and strengthen perseverance. The goal is to live the remaining time according to the will of God rather than the desires that shaped the former life.
