1 Peter 4:2

Posted on 18 May at 11:35
Listen to this article

“That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.”

Context:The First Epistle of Peter, or simply 1 Peter, was written by the Apostle Peter to encourage and instruct Christians who were facing persecution and trials. In this particular verse, Peter emphasizes the importance of living according to the will of God rather than indulging in worldly desires.

Living the rest of our time in the flesh:Peter reminds believers that they are no longer to live their lives dominated by human desires or cravings. Before accepting Christ, people often prioritise fulfilling their own sinful desires, but as Christians, their perspective should change. They are called to a higher standard of living, guided by God’s will.

Transformation of desires:By saying “the lusts of men,” Peter is referring to the sinful desires that are common among humanity. These include various forms of greed, sexual immorality, selfish ambition, and any other desires that are contrary to God’s commands. As believers, we are called to transform our desires and align them with God’s will.

The will of God:Instead of being driven by worldly passions, Peter encourages believers to pursue and align themselves with the will of God. God’s will encompasses His divine purposes, plans, and instructions for our lives. It includes living in obedience to His commands, seeking His guidance, and following the example of Jesus Christ.

Application:

This verse challenges believers to examine their lives and evaluate the ways they are living. It encourages them to redirect their focus and pursue God’s will rather than indulging in sinful desires. Here are a few practical applications we can draw from this verse:

  • Seek God’s will:Spend time in prayer and studying the Scriptures to understand God’s will for your life. Ask Him to guide your decisions, actions, and priorities.
  • Transform your desires:Identify any sinful desires or cravings that are contrary to God’s will. Seek the help of the Holy Spirit to renew your mind and align your desires with God’s desires.
  • Prioritise obedience:Commit to living a life of obedience to God’s commands. This involves making choices that reflect His character and values, even if it means going against the cultural norms or personal preferences.
  • Rely on God’s strength:Living according to God’s will requires the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit. Depend on God’s strength to overcome temptations and to continually walk in His ways.
  • Share God’s will with others:As you grow in your understanding of God’s will, share it with others. Encourage fellow believers to live according to God’s purposes, and lovingly share the message of salvation with those who are still seeking.

Remember, 1 Peter 4:2 calls us to live a transformed life, surrendered to the will of God. By doing so, we become a testimony of God’s grace and power in this world.
