1 Samuel 23:12
Then said David, Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul? And the Lord said, They will deliver thee up.
1 Samuel 23:12 (KJV)
Context
David had just delivered the city of Keilah from the Philistines after inquiring of the Lord (1 Samuel 23:1-5). Yet Saul, the jealous king, learned that David was there and planned to capture him. In verse 10, David asked the Lord two questions: whether Saul would come down, and whether the men of Keilah would hand him over. The Lord answered both affirmatively. In verse 12, David repeats the second question, and the Lord replies plainly, “They will deliver thee up.”
Meaning
The phrase “men of Keilah” refers to the city’s leaders and chief men. The Lord’s answer was conditional: if David remained until Saul came down, the people of Keilah would betray him. This was not a vague warning but a direct revelation of their hearts. The people David had just saved were inclined to hand him over, showing great ingratitude. The Lord knew their dispositions and chose to guide His servant away from danger.
Biblical connections
David’s pattern throughout this chapter is to seek the Lord’s guidance in uncertainty, and the Lord faithfully answered him. The narrative continues with David and his men, about six hundred, leaving Keilah to escape Saul’s pursuit (1 Samuel 23:13). This episode shows that divine sovereignty remains intact even amid human treachery.
Application
Believers must trust God’s direction, recognize that betrayal can come from unexpected sources, and remain vigilant in adversity. The Lord’s counsel equips the faithful to navigate trials with confidence and hope, even when human allies prove unreliable.
Reflection
God’s guidance is both truthful and protective. He does not hide the dangers ahead, but He also provides a way of escape. David heeded the warning and withdrew, demonstrating that obedience to divine counsel leads to safety and continued faithfulness.
