1 Samuel 23:16

And Jonathan Saul’s son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God.

1 Samuel 23:16 (KJV)

David was fleeing from King Saul, who was jealous of David’s popularity and of God’s favour upon him. At this time, David was hiding in the wilderness of Ziph. Jonathan, Saul’s son and David’s close friend, came to visit him there, travelling from Gibeah, about twenty-two miles away, to meet David privately in the wood.

Jonathan’s visit demonstrates the deep bond of friendship between him and David. His actions reveal loyalty and support in a challenging time. The phrase “strengthened his hand in God” indicates that Jonathan provided David with spiritual encouragement, reassuring his faith in the true God. In the midst of trials, David found comfort in the Lord through the presence and words of his friend. Jonathan likely reminded David of God’s promises and encouraged him to remain faithful.

This act of encouragement is a model of godly friendship, showing how one believer can strengthen another’s faith by pointing them to God rather than to circumstances. Jonathan risked his own safety by visiting David, knowing that his father Saul was seeking to kill David. Their friendship is a beautiful example of selflessness, support, and loyalty.

This verse teaches the importance of friendship, encouragement, and finding strength in God during challenging times. True friends are a gift from God, and their presence can provide comfort and spiritual strength in the midst of adversity. We are called to strengthen one another’s hands in God, pointing each other to His faithfulness and promises.

David’s situation was difficult and dangerous, yet in the midst of it, he found solace in God’s presence. Jonathan’s visit reminded David that he was not alone, and that God was with him even in the wilderness. God’s faithfulness is unwavering, and He provides strength and comfort to His people in times of trouble.
