1 Samuel 25:17
Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household: for he is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.
1 Samuel 25:17 (KJV)
Context
This verse is a servant’s urgent warning to Abigail, Nabal’s wife. David, fleeing from King Saul, had protected Nabal’s shepherds in the wilderness. When David asked for provisions, Nabal refused rudely. David then prepared to attack Nabal’s household. The servant speaks because the danger is real and immediate.
Meaning
The servant tells Abigail to “know and consider” what she will do. This is a call for careful thought and quick action. “Evil is determined against our master” means that harm is certain to come upon Nabal and his family because of his foolishness. The phrase “son of Belial” describes a worthless, wicked, and good-for-nothing person. Nabal is so unreasonable that no one can even speak to him. The servant’s words are not a threat but a truthful warning. He knows that Nabal’s behavior has put everyone in the household at risk. Abigail must understand the seriousness of the moment. She cannot delay or hope the problem will disappear.
Biblical connections
This situation shows how one person’s folly can endanger many. Nabal’s harshness brought danger to his whole household. In contrast, Abigail’s wisdom and discretion later prevent bloodshed, as seen in 1 Samuel 25:23-35. Her humble approach to David mirrors the wisdom praised in Proverbs 15:1, where a gentle answer turns away wrath. The servant’s role also matters. He speaks the truth even though it exposes his master’s fault. His courage gives Abigail the chance to act. God often uses ordinary people to carry warnings and open the way for peace.
Application
We learn the importance of heeding wise counsel. The servant spoke truthfully about Nabal, and Abigail listened. In our own lives, we should be ready to receive warnings from others, even when they are hard to hear. We also see the value of acting wisely in crisis. Abigail did not panic; she considered her options and responded with humility and respect. When we face danger or conflict, we can pause, seek God’s guidance, and choose words that calm rather than inflame. A single wise person can change the outcome for many.
Reflection
This verse reminds us that our actions affect those around us. Nabal’s pride and rudeness brought peril to his entire household. Yet God used a wise and brave woman to bring peace. We are called to be like Abigail, using discernment and courage to prevent harm. We should also examine our own hearts, asking whether our words and deeds bring safety or danger to others. When we see trouble coming, we can act with faith instead of fear. God can use our small steps of obedience to protect and bless those we love.
