1 Samuel 25:19

And she said unto her servants, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not her husband Nabal.

1 Samuel 25:19 (KJV)

David was fleeing from King Saul and had protected the flocks of a wealthy man named Nabal in Carmel. When David asked for food, Nabal refused rudely. David then prepared to attack Nabal’s household. Abigail, Nabal’s wife, learned of the danger and acted quickly.

In this verse, Abigail sends her servants ahead with a generous gift of food, saying, “Go on before me; behold, I come after you.” She also keeps her plan secret from Nabal. Her actions show wisdom and courage. She knew her husband’s harsh reply had provoked David, and she moved to prevent bloodshed. Her deliberate choice to send the gift first was meant to pacify David and prepare him to hear her plea.

Abigail’s decision to act without telling Nabal was prudent. Nabal was selfish and would likely have stopped her. By sending the gift ahead, she prepared the way to meet David and plead for peace. Her initiative contrasts with Nabal’s folly.

Abigail’s wise intervention resembles the peacemaking praised in Proverbs 15:1, where a gentle answer turns away wrath. Her careful timing and humble approach also reflect the value of discernment in conflict.

This verse encourages believers to act wisely in crises, even when those in authority fail. Abigail did not rebel against her husband; she worked to save his household. Her example shows that timely, humble action can avert disaster.

When faced with conflict, we can ask God for wisdom to know when to speak, when to act, and when to wait. Abigail’s gift was practical and generous, reminding us that peacemaking often requires real sacrifice. Her faith in God’s guidance gave her the courage to act decisively.

Abigail’s courage challenges us to trust God in difficult situations. She did not know the outcome, but she acted with faith and good judgment. Her story invites us to consider how we respond when our words or the words of others create danger.
