1 Thessalonians 5:23
And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Thessalonians 5:23 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the concluding remarks of Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians. It is a prayer and a desire for the believers’ sanctification and preservation in preparation for the return of Jesus Christ.
Meaning
Paul begins by acknowledging God as the source of peace. He prays for the Thessalonian believers to be sanctified entirely. Sanctification refers to the process of being set apart and made holy by God. It involves both an initial consecration at salvation and an ongoing process of growth and transformation through the work of the Holy Spirit. The prayer is for complete, entire sanctification—”through and through“—not a partial work.
Paul’s prayer extends to the preservation of the Thessalonian believers. He desires that they remain blameless, without guilt or fault, in their entire being. Here, Paul highlights the tripartite nature of human existence, comprising the spirit, soul, and body.
Spirit: The spirit refers to the deepest part of our being, the innermost core where the Holy Spirit dwells in the life of a believer. It is the aspect that connects with God and is renewed by the Holy Spirit.
Soul: The soul encompasses the mind, emotions, and will. It is the seat of our personality and consciousness. The soul is transformed and aligned with God’s will through the process of sanctification.
Body: The body represents the physical aspect of our existence. Although susceptible to sin and decay, it is also important in our service to God. Paul’s desire is for the believers to be preserved physically, enabling them to fulfill their calling and purpose.
The ultimate goal of Paul’s prayer is that the Thessalonian believers would be kept blameless until the second coming of Jesus Christ. This phrase emphasizes the future hope and expectation of believers for the return of Jesus, when He will establish His kingdom and fully consummate the work of salvation.
Application
Sanctification is not a work of human effort alone but is initiated and accomplished by God Himself. The title “God of peace” connects to the holistic and harmonious transformation that comes through this process. Believers can trust God to keep them blameless as they await Christ’s return, living each day in the assurance of His ongoing work.
Reflection
This verse serves as a benediction, following Paul’s exhortations in the letter, and expresses his pastoral concern for their spiritual well-being. It underscores the transformative work of God and the believers’ ultimate hope in the fulfilment of God’s promises.
