1 Thessalonians 5:24

Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

Context

The apostle Paul wrote 1 Thessalonians to encourage the believers in Thessalonica. In this verse, he closes his letter with a strong assurance about God’s faithfulness and His commitment to complete what He has begun in their lives.

Meaning

The verse declares that God is faithful. His faithfulness means He can always be trusted to fulfill what He has promised. This truth applies to every aspect of His character and His dealings with His people.

The verse also speaks of the divine call. God takes the initiative in drawing people to Himself and inviting them into a relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. This call is an act of His grace, rooted in His love and mercy.

Paul then affirms that the God who calls will also “do it.” The “it” points back to the preceding prayer for the believers’ complete sanctification—spirit, soul, and body—and their preservation blameless at the coming of Christ. Thus, the believer’s confidence rests on God’s character, not on human effort.
