1 Timothy 1:10

For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;

1 Timothy 1:10 (KJV)

The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to Timothy, his younger co-worker, to instruct and encourage him as a leader of the church at Ephesus. In this verse, Paul continues a list of sinful behaviors that are contrary to sound doctrine, building on the thought from verse 9 that the law is made for the lawless and disobedient.

Paul names specific sins that stand opposed to the wholesome teaching of the Gospel. Whoremongers are those who engage in sexual immorality, particularly prostitution or promiscuity. Them that defile themselves with mankind is a phrase often interpreted as referring to homosexual behavior or same-sex relations. Menstealers are those who kidnap or enslave others, especially men. Liars are those who habitually deceive, including in trade and merchandise. Perjured persons are those who lie under oath or give false testimony. The phrase “and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine” shows that this list is not exhaustive; it represents a broader category of behaviors that contradict the faith.

Sound doctrine refers to the teachings of the Christian faith that are consistent with Scripture and the words of Jesus Christ. The law, as Paul explains, lies against these sins as an accusing and condemning power, charging and punishing them. This verse connects to the seventh commandment (Exodus 20:14) regarding sexual immorality, and to Leviticus 6:2 concerning deceitful dealings in trade. The Gospel, in contrast, offers soundness and health to those who believe, nourishing souls unto eternal life.

As believers, we are called to examine our own lives and ensure our behavior aligns with the teachings of Jesus and the sound doctrine of the Bible. This includes abstaining from sexual immorality, speaking the truth, and treating others with love and respect. While this verse addresses specific behaviors, we should approach discussions on these topics with love, understanding, and sensitivity, recognizing that each individual’s journey is unique. Studying the surrounding verses and the overall message of the Bible provides a more comprehensive understanding of God’s guidance for our lives.

Paul’s concern is for the purity and holiness of the church. He reminds Timothy and the believers in Ephesus that certain behaviors are contrary to sound doctrine and should be avoided. His intention is to promote a godly lifestyle rooted in love, truth, and righteousness. This verse calls us to hold fast to the wholesome words of Christ and to live in a way that honors God and reflects His character.
