But if any widow haue children or nephewes, let them learne first to shew pietie at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God. 1 Timothy 5:4 (KJV)

Context: The book of 1 Timothy is a pastoral letter written by the Apostle Paul to Timothy, a young pastor in Ephesus. In this particular verse, Paul is addressing the care of widows within the church community.

Widows and Family Responsibility: Paul begins by emphasizing the responsibility of family members, specifically children and nephews, to care for widows in their own family. This highlights the importance of familial support and the duty of relatives to provide for their own kin.

Learning Piety at Home: Paul encourages widows’ children and nephews to “learn first to show piety at home.” Piety refers to reverence, respect, and godliness. This verse emphasizes the importance of cultivating godly character within the family unit. It implies that the family is the primary context where individuals should learn to demonstrate devotion to God and fulfill their responsibilities.

Requiting Parents: The verse further states that children and nephews should “requite their parents.” To requite means to repay or to show gratitude. This indicates that children should acknowledge the care, support, and sacrifice of their parents and respond with honor, respect, and assistance as they age. By doing so, they please God.

Good and Acceptable before God: Paul concludes by stating that showing piety at home and repaying parents is good and acceptable before God. This demonstrates that honoring and caring for one’s family members aligns with God’s will and is a pleasing act of obedience.

Application: Family Responsibility: This verse emphasizes the importance of honoring and caring for our family members, particularly our parents and elderly relatives. It reminds us of our responsibility to support and provide for them.

Piety at Home: Our homes should be places where we cultivate godliness, demonstrating reverence for God through our actions, words, and relationships. We should strive to create an environment that reflects Christ’s love and character.

Gratitude and Repayment: Children should express gratitude and repay their parents’ love and care as they grow older. We can show this through acts of kindness, respect, and assistance.

Pleasing God: By fulfilling our family responsibilities and showing piety at home, we please God. Our actions within our families have spiritual significance and are an essential part of our Christian witness.

Remember, the broader context of this verse and the surrounding verses should also be considered when studying and applying its teachings.
