2 Chronicles 1:7
“In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee.”
Context:The book of 2 Chronicles is a historical account that focuses on the reign of the kings of Judah. In this particular verse, King Solomon, the son of David, has recently become king and is seeking God’s guidance.
God’s Appearance:The verse begins by stating that God appeared to Solomon during the night. This implies a special encounter between God and Solomon, indicating that God was about to communicate something significant.
Solomon’s Opportunity:When God appeared to Solomon, He invited him to ask for anything he desired. This divine encounter presented Solomon with an extraordinary opportunity to make a request from God. This highlights God’s willingness to hear and respond to the prayers of His people.
Solomon’s Response:The subsequent verses (2 Chronicles 1:8-10) record Solomon’s humble and wise response to God’s offer. Instead of asking for personal wealth, power, or fame, Solomon requested wisdom and knowledge to govern God’s people justly. He recognised the weighty responsibility of leading the nation and desired God’s guidance to fulfill his role faithfully.
God’s Blessing:Solomon’s request pleased God, and He commended Solomon for asking for wisdom and discernment rather than selfish desires. As a result, God granted Solomon’s request for wisdom and also promised to bless him with riches and honour beyond any king before him (2 Chronicles 1:11-12).
