2 Chronicles 2:14 belongs to the Old Testament narrative that records the reign of Solomon, son of King David, and his preparations to build the temple in Jerusalem. The verse introduces a master craftsman whom Solomon intends to employ for this sacred project. The craftsman’s lineage is noteworthy: he is the son of a woman from the tribe of Dan, while his father was a man of Tyre. This mixed Israelite‑and‑Phoenician heritage underscores the inclusion of foreign expertise in the service of God’s house.
The passage enumerates the artisan’s extraordinary abilities. He is described as skilful in working with gold, silver, brass, iron, stone, and timber, and also adept with luxurious materials such as purple, blue, fine linen, and crimson. Moreover, he can execute any form of engraving and devise every device that may be required. Such a breadth of skill reflects the high standard of workmanship Solomon desired for the temple, ensuring that every element would be crafted with precision and beauty.
Solomon’s plan involves collaboration. He will combine the talents of this Tyrian‑Danite craftsman with his own “cunning men” and those of his father David. This partnership of Israel’s finest artisans with seasoned foreign craftsmen demonstrates a strategic approach to achieving excellence in the temple’s construction.
The verse therefore highlights the importance of skilled craftsmanship in worship. By seeking out the most capable workers, Solomon affirms that the house of the Lord must be built not only with reverence but also with the highest quality of artistry. The resulting temple would stand as a testament to divine glory, reflecting both spiritual devotion and human excellence in design and execution.
