And now I have sent a cunning man, endued with understanding, of Huram my father’s,

Context

King Solomon is preparing to build the temple in Jerusalem. He has asked Hiram, king of Tyre, for cedar trees and a skilled craftsman. In this verse, Hiram replies that he has sent a man named Huram-abi, who is “cunning” and “endued with understanding.” The word “cunning” here means skillful or wise, not deceptive. This craftsman comes from Hiram’s own family, as the phrase “of Huram my father’s” indicates. God had given Solomon wisdom, and Solomon was using that wisdom to carry out the work.

Meaning

The Hebrew term “hakam” describes someone who is skillful, wise, or prudent. Huram-abi possessed the expertise needed for the temple’s construction, working with gold, silver, bronze, iron, stone, and wood. His skill was a gift from God, for all good gifts come from Him. The verse shows that God provided the right person for the sacred work. It also reminds us that excellence in service honors the Lord.

Biblical connections

This sending of a craftsman is part of God’s promise to David that his son would build the temple. The cooperation between Israel and Tyre was common in the ancient Near East. In the New Testament, believers are called the temple of the Holy Spirit, and building up the church requires the gifts God gives (1 Corinthians 3:16). Just as the temple was a place for God’s presence, the church is built through the varied abilities He supplies.

God gives diverse skills and abilities to people, and these are to be used for His glory. Believers should develop their talents, seek wisdom, and work together with others to accomplish God’s purposes. Excellence in work is an act of worship, done as unto the Lord.
