Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance. 2 Chronicles 24:11 (KJV)
Joash began to reign at the age of seven and did what was right in the sight of the Lord as long as the priest Jehoiada was alive and providing guidance. During Jehoiada’s lifetime Joash initiated repairs to the temple of the Lord, which had fallen into disrepair. The chest referred to was used to collect offerings and donations for the restoration of the temple. It was placed at the gate of the house of the Lord and later brought to the king’s office, a designated place for managing the funds. The Levites were responsible for bringing the chest and presenting it to the king’s office. The king’s scribe and the high priest’s officer were responsible for managing the funds collected, emptying the chest, counting the money, and ensuring it was used for its intended purpose. The daily collection of funds indicates continuous support and dedication from the people, and the abundance of money shows their generosity toward the temple restoration. This process highlights the importance of responsible stewardship and accountability in handling resources dedicated to God’s work. It also demonstrates the value of consistent and sacrificial giving, as well as the significance of maintaining places of worship. By contributing to God’s work believers trust in His provision and faithfulness.
