2 Chronicles 26:10

Also he built towers in the desert, and digged many wells: for he had much cattle, both in the low country, and in the plains: husbandmen also, and vine dressers in the mountains, and in Carmel: for he loved husbandry.

2 Chronicles 26:10 (KJV)

Uzziah, also called Azariah, became king of Judah at sixteen and reigned fifty-two years. Early in his reign he sought the Lord and prospered. This verse records his farming and building projects: towers in the desert, many wells, large herds, and workers in the fields and vineyards. His reign was marked by careful planning and diligent work.

The towers were watchtowers. They protected shepherds and flocks from thieves and wild animals. Wells gave water for people and cattle in dry land. Uzziah had many cattle in the low country and the plains. He also had farmers and vine-dressers in the mountains and in Carmel. Carmel here means a fertile place, not the mountain where Elijah later stood. The verse says plainly that he loved husbandry, that is, farming and caring for the soil. This love for the land was not a small matter; it was a God-given vocation that brought prosperity.

This careful work prepared the way for later trouble. After great success, Uzziah became proud and entered the temple to burn incense, which only priests could do. Because of that, the Lord struck him with leprosy (2 Chronicles 26:16-21). His earlier diligence makes the later fall more serious. Good beginnings do not guarantee a faithful end. The same wisdom that built towers and dug wells could not guard his heart from pride.

Uzziah shows wise stewardship. He planned ahead, built for safety, and provided water. He worked with joy, not just duty. Believers can learn to manage resources carefully and to find satisfaction in honest labor. Yet this passage also warns that success can lead to pride. Every gift and every achievement comes from God, so gratitude should guard the heart. Consider how you use your time, talents, and possessions. Do you work with diligence and joy, or only out of obligation?

God cares about ordinary work. Tending fields, digging wells, and guarding flocks are not small in his sight. He gives skill and strength for daily tasks. Let this verse encourage faithful service in whatever work God has placed before you, and let it remind you to stay humble when that work prospers.
