2 Chronicles 27:9
And Jotham slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Ahaz his son reigned in his stead.
2 Chronicles 27:9 (KJV)
Context
The book of 2 Chronicles records the history of the kings of Judah, the southern kingdom. Jotham was one of the righteous kings. He became king at age twenty-five and reigned for sixteen years in Jerusalem. He followed the Lord and strengthened the nation through building projects and by subduing the Ammonites. His reign was marked by faithfulness, yet the people continued in corrupt practices.
Meaning
This verse records the end of Jotham’s reign. The phrase “slept with his fathers” is a gentle way of saying he died, and it shows that he joined his ancestors in death. He was buried in the city of David, the traditional burial place for Judah’s kings. This burial honored him and connected him to the royal line. The verse also notes that his son Ahaz became king after him. The parallel account in 2 Kings 15:38 adds that he was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father.
Biblical connections
Jotham’s burial in the city of David links him to God’s promise to David that his descendants would sit on the throne (2 Samuel 7:12-13). This promise pointed to the coming Messiah, who would come from David’s family. The transition to Ahaz is significant because Ahaz turned away from the Lord and led Judah into idolatry. This contrast shows that a parent’s faithfulness does not guarantee the same faith in the next generation. The burial also signifies honor and continuity with the Davidic line, pointing to God’s ongoing covenant with David’s dynasty.
Application
Jotham’s life teaches us the value of faithful obedience. His building projects and military successes came from following God. Yet his son chose a different path. This reminds us that each person must personally decide to follow the Lord. We cannot rely on the faith of our parents or leaders. We are responsible for our own relationship with God. The uncertainty of how children will follow the spiritual example of their parents calls us to pray and live faithfully before them.
Reflection
This verse also reminds us of the brevity of life. Even a good king like Jotham died and was buried. Our time on earth is limited. We should use it to honor God and to leave a godly example for those who come after us. While we cannot control the choices of our children, we can pray for them and live faithfully before them. The certainty of death calls us to live with purpose and to trust in God’s eternal promises.
