2 Kings 15:38

Posted on 18 May at 11:18

And Iotham slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the citie of Dauid his father, and Ahaz his sonne reigned in his stead. 2 Kings 15:38 (KJV)

Historical Context: 2 Kings 15:38 is part of the historical account of the kings of Judah and Israel. Jotham was the son of Uzziah and the king of Judah. He reigned for sixteen years and is generally considered a righteous king who followed the ways of the Lord. This verse marks the end of Jotham’s reign and the beginning of the reign of his son Ahaz.

Jotham’s Death: The phrase “Jotham slept with his fathers” indicates that Jotham died and was buried in the city of David, where his ancestors were buried. This idiom was a common biblical way of referring to death. His death marked the end of his reign and his departure from the earthly realm, reminding us of the brevity of human life and the inevitability of mortality.

Ahaz’s Reign: Following Jotham’s death, his son Ahaz succeeded him as king of Judah. Ahaz’s reign was marked by a departure from the ways of the Lord. Unlike his father, Ahaz embraced idolatry and engaged in various wicked practices. His reign was characterised by political instability, conflicts with neighbouring nations, and severe consequences that ultimately led to Judah’s downfall and exile.

Legacy: Jotham’s reign serves as an example of a righteous king who followed the ways of the Lord. His commitment to God’s commands and his faithfulness had a positive impact on the nation during his reign. Believers are encouraged to strive to leave behind a godly legacy in their families, communities, and spheres of influence.

Spiritual Heritage: Jotham was buried with his fathers in the city of David, emphasizing his connection to his ancestors. This highlights the importance of recognising and valuing our spiritual heritage, remembering the faithfulness of those who have gone before us, and building upon their foundation.

Consequences of Disobedience: The contrast between Jotham and his son Ahaz illustrates the consequences of turning away from God. Ahaz’s reign, marked by idolatry and sin, serves as a warning about the destructive nature of disobedience and the need to remain faithful to God’s commands.

Mortality and Eternity: The phrase “Jotham slept with his fathers” reminds us of the brevity of human life and the reality of death. It prompts us to consider our own mortality and to prepare for eternity, focusing on a relationship with God and investing in things of eternal significance.

In conclusion, 2 Kings 15:38 portrays the transition of power from Jotham to his son Ahaz. It highlights the importance of leaving a godly legacy, recognising our spiritual heritage, and understanding the consequences of disobedience. It also calls us to reflect on the fleeting nature of life and to focus on eternal matters.
