In the seventeenth year of Pekah the son of Remaliah Ahaz the son of Jotham king of Judah began to reign.

2 Kings 16:1 (KJV)

2 Kings 16:1 introduces the reign of Ahaz, the son of Jotham, as king of Judah. The book of 2 Kings records the history of the kings of Israel and Judah, highlighting their faithfulness or unfaithfulness to God’s covenant and the resulting consequences for their nations.

At this point in Israel’s history, the kingdom had been divided into two: the northern kingdom of Israel, with its capital in Samaria, and the southern kingdom of Judah, with its capital in Jerusalem. Ahaz’s reign took place during a time of political turmoil and spiritual decline.

The verse states that Ahaz began to reign in the seventeenth year of Pekah, the son of Remaliah. Pekah was the king of Israel at that time. This detail provides a chronological reference point and helps establish the historical context. The synchronization is precise: Jotham began to reign in the second year of Pekah and reigned sixteen years, so his last year fell in the eighteenth year of Pekah. However, because Jotham’s first year may have begun at the start of Pekah’s second year, his final year could be placed toward the end of Pekah’s seventeenth year, as stated here. This underscores the historical reliability of the biblical record.

Ahaz, the son of Jotham, came to power in Judah. Unfortunately, Ahaz did not follow the ways of the Lord as his father Jotham had done. Instead, Ahaz turned to idolatry and introduced various pagan practices into the religious life of the kingdom. His reign was marked by spiritual decline, with the people of Judah forsaking the worship of the true God. The mention of Ahaz as “son of Jotham” connects him to the Davidic line, a significant theological thread, though his later actions would show unfaithfulness to that heritage.

The introduction of Ahaz’s reign in this verse serves as a foreshadowing of the spiritual challenges and difficulties that lie ahead for the kingdom of Judah. Ahaz’s unfaithfulness to God’s covenant had grave consequences for the nation, leading to God’s judgment and the eventual downfall of Judah. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of faithful leadership and obedience to God’s commands. It also emphasizes the long-term effects that a king’s actions can have on the spiritual condition of a nation.

2 Kings 16:1 sets the stage for the subsequent events and provides an important historical and spiritual context for understanding the challenges faced by the kingdom of Judah during Ahaz’s reign.
