2 Kings 15:37
In those days the Lord began to send against Judah Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah.
2 Kings 15:37 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the closing years of Jotham’s reign over Judah, when the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah were divided. Rezin ruled Syria, also called Aram, and Pekah ruled Israel. Their alliance against Judah appears again in 2 Kings 16:5, where they besieged Jerusalem but could not capture it. The phrase “In those days” points to the latter part of Jotham’s rule, showing that these events began to unfold during his time.
Meaning
The phrase “the LORD began to send against Judah” shows that God Himself directed these attacks. He used foreign kings as instruments of His judgment. Their actions were not random; they served His purpose. This sending was discipline for Judah’s idolatry, a pattern seen throughout the Old Testament when God’s people turned away from Him. Even pagan rulers act under God’s control, and His sovereignty extends over all earthly powers.
Biblical connections
Isaiah 7:1 also records this same alliance, showing that the threat was real and that God was at work through it. The prophets Isaiah and Micah were active during this time, calling the nation to repentance. Their message confirms that judgment was meant to lead people back to God, not merely to punish them. God’s discipline is purposeful, and He remains actively involved in the affairs of nations.
Application
God remains sovereign over all rulers and events. When trouble comes, believers can trust that He is still in control and working out His purposes. Disobedience brings real consequences, so this verse warns us to obey God and seek His guidance. Yet discipline is not the final word; God desires restoration for those who return to Him.
Reflection
This passage urges us to examine our own lives. Are we resisting God’s correction or responding to it? The same God who sent nations against Judah also sent prophets to call His people back. His discipline is purposeful, and His mercy is ready for all who repent.
