2 Chronicles 32:11
Doth not Hezekiah persuade you to give over yourselves to die by famine and by thirst, saying, The Lord our God shall deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
2 Chronicles 32:11 (KJV)
Context
This verse records the words of the Assyrian field commander during King Sennacherib’s siege of Jerusalem. He had already captured many fortified cities of Judah, and now he spoke to the people on the wall, trying to make them surrender. Hezekiah had prepared the city by strengthening its walls and securing its water supply, while also urging the people to trust in the LORD.
Meaning
The commander twists Hezekiah’s message of faith into a charge of deception. He claims that Hezekiah is persuading the people to “give over yourselves to die by famine and by thirst.” The Assyrian argues that no god of any nation has stopped Assyria, so the LORD cannot deliver Jerusalem. His words are psychological warfare, meant to break morale and turn the people against their king and their God. The taunt is a direct challenge to the LORD’s power and to Hezekiah’s leadership.
Biblical connections
The taunt directly challenges the LORD’s power, a pattern seen elsewhere when enemies mock God’s people. Hezekiah’s response, recorded in the following verses, is to seek the LORD in prayer with the prophet Isaiah. That prayer leads to God’s miraculous deliverance by an angel, showing that human boasting is futile against divine power. This verse reminds us that God’s deliverance often comes after a period of testing.
Application
Believers today face similar voices that question God’s ability to save. The enemy’s words can be loud and persuasive, especially in times of crisis. Like Hezekiah, we should respond with prayer and steadfast trust, not with panic or surrender. Our words also carry power; we can choose to speak hope and faith to those who are afraid.
Reflection
When circumstances seem hopeless, remember that God’s deliverance often comes after a period of testing. The Assyrian commander’s boast did not save him, but Hezekiah’s faith honored the LORD. Hold fast to God’s promises, encourage others with words of hope, and trust that the LORD can overcome any obstacle.
