2 Chronicles 35:7
In this verse, we see King Josiah’s generosity and dedication to observing the Passover according to the law of Moses.
Historical Context:
King Josiah was one of the righteous kings of Judah who sought to bring about religious reforms and restore the worship of God. During his reign, he made efforts to rid the kingdom of idolatry and reinstate the proper worship of God. In the eighteenth year of his reign, Josiah ordered the repair of the temple, which led to the discovery of the Book of the Law (believed to be the book of Deuteronomy) and a renewal of the covenant between God and His people.
- The Passover Celebration:
The Passover was an important annual festival for the Israelites, commemorating their deliverance from slavery in Egypt. According to the Mosaic Law, the Passover required the sacrifice of a lamb without blemish. The blood of the lamb was applied to the doorposts of each household, signifying their obedience and faith in God’s promise of protection from the final plague on Egypt.
Josiah’s Generosity:
In this verse, we see Josiah’s commitment to observing the Passover by providing sacrificial animals for the people. He generously gave lambs and kids from his own flock, as well as three thousand bullocks, which were taken from the king’s substance. This act of generosity demonstrated Josiah’s desire to ensure that the people could participate fully in the Passover and fulfill the requirements of the Law.
