2 Chronicles 6:16

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

Now therefore, O Lord God of Israel, keepe with thy seruant Dauid my father, that which thou hast promised him, saying, There shall not faile thee a man in my sight, to sit vpon the throne of Israel: yet so, that thy children take heede to their way, to walke in my Law, as thou hast walked before me. 2 Chronicles 6:16 (KJV)

In this verse King Solomon is praying to God during the dedication of the temple he built in Jerusalem. He begins by acknowledging that God had made promises to his father David, promising that there would always be a descendant of David sitting on the throne of Israel. Solomon refers to this promise and acknowledges God as the LORD God of Israel, demonstrating his understanding and faith in God’s covenant with David.

Solomon implores God to keep the promise He made to David, recognizing that for the promise to be fulfilled it is essential for God to remain faithful. This reveals Solomon’s trust in God’s faithfulness and his reliance on God to uphold His word.

He also adds a condition to the promise. Solomon acknowledges that for the descendants of David to maintain their place on the throne they must walk in God’s law and keep God’s commandments. He understands that the covenant is contingent upon the obedience of David’s descendants, emphasizing the importance of adhering to God’s law as a prerequisite for receiving His blessings.

Overall this passage highlights Solomon’s reverence for God, his confidence in God’s promises, and the recognition that obedience to God’s law and commandments is essential for the fulfillment of those promises. It underscores the idea that God’s faithfulness is interwoven with human responsibility to walk in His ways.
