2 Chronicles 6:17
Now then, O Lord God of Israel, let thy word be verified, which thou hast spoken vnto thy seruant Dauid. 2 Chronicles 6:17 (KJV)
Solomon’s prayer at the dedication of the temple he had built for the Lord is recorded in this verse. He addresses the Almighty as “the LORD God of Israel,” acknowledging the covenant relationship between God and His people. By invoking the title, Solomon affirms the authority and trustworthiness of God’s Word.
The prayer contains two closely related petitions. First, Solomon asks that “thy word be verified,” expressing his desire that God fulfill the promises He has spoken. Second, he implores God to “keep for ever His covenant,” seeking the perpetual maintenance of the covenant made with David. Both petitions reflect Solomon’s confidence that God’s promises are reliable and that the covenant will endure.
Solomon specifically refers to the promises given to his father, David, that his dynasty would be established forever (cf. 2 Samuel 7:12‑16). By invoking these promises, Solomon underscores the importance of God’s faithfulness to David’s line and to the nation of Israel.
Through this prayer Solomon demonstrates a deep trust in God’s faithfulness. He recognizes that God’s Word is true and reliable, and he believes that God will bring to completion the covenant and the promises spoken to David.
Lessons drawn from 2 Chronicles 6:17 include:
- Trust in God’s Word – Like Solomon, believers should acknowledge the authority and reliability of Scripture, allowing it to guide their lives.
- Pray for the Fulfillment of God’s Promises – As Solomon prayed for the realization of the covenant promises, we can pray for God’s promises in our own circumstances, trusting in His perfect timing.
- Recognize God’s Covenant Faithfulness – The prayer highlights that God remains faithful across generations; this assurance should comfort and strengthen our faith.
Ultimately, this verse reminds us of the importance of trusting in God’s Word and relying on His steadfast covenant faithfulness. Through prayer and a deep understanding of His promises, we can have confidence in God’s faithfulness and experience His blessings in our lives.
