Context

Spiritually, being sealed by God means that believers are marked as belonging to Him, set apart for His purposes, and secured by His power. The word “earnest” can also be translated as a “deposit,” “down payment,” or “guarantee.” It refers to a partial payment that guarantees the full amount will be paid. In this case, the earnest or guarantee is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to believers as a foretaste of the future blessings and inheritance they will receive. The Spirit’s presence in the heart is both a guarantee of what God has promised and an initial experience of the fullness of that promise.
