2 Corinthians 10:13

But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.

2 Corinthians 10:13 (KJV)

Paul wrote 2 Corinthians to address challenges in the Corinthian church, including false teachers who questioned his apostolic authority. In this section, he defends his credibility by contrasting his approach with those who commend themselves and measure themselves by themselves, a practice he calls unwise (2 Corinthians 10:12).

Paul declares he will not boast beyond his measure. The Greek word for “rule” (kanon) denotes a defined sphere or area of ministry assigned by God. Paul’s “measure” is the apportionment of his Gospel labors, which God has sovereignly distributed. His boasting is legitimate because it is confined to what God actually did through him, not to self-promotion or comparison with others.

Paul emphasizes that his authority, influence, and sphere of ministry are determined by God. Every believer has a unique measure of influence and responsibility assigned by God. It is essential to acknowledge these God-given boundaries and not overstep them, remaining content and faithful in the areas where God has called us.

Paul further explains that his measure extends “even unto you.” The Corinthians were within the bounds of his God-given influence, as he was the first to bring the Gospel to them (2 Corinthians 10:14). His authority, exercised with humility and grace, reached them for their spiritual benefit and growth.

The following verses clarify that boasting “without our measure” means boasting in “other men’s labours” (2 Corinthians 10:15-16). The passage concludes with the principle that true glory belongs to the Lord, and approval comes from Him, not from self-commendation (2 Corinthians 10:17-18).

We should avoid boasting excessively and recognize that any influence or authority we have comes from God. It is essential to boast in the Lord and acknowledge His grace at work in our lives.

We should be faithful with the measure of influence and responsibility God has given us. Instead of comparing ourselves with others or desiring more, we can find contentment in fulfilling our unique calling and serving faithfully where we are.

Like Paul, we can strive to extend our influence and ministry to others within the bounds of our God-given measure. This includes reaching out, serving, and sharing the love of Christ with those around us.

Legitimate Christian confidence is rooted in God’s assignment, not in self-promotion or comparison. The “measure” is not a limit to be resented but a God-given boundary that defines our calling and provides a basis for confident, truthful testimony.
