preaching
the gospel of Christ: 2 Corinthians 10:14 (KJV)
Context: The book of 2 Corinthians was written by the apostle Paul to the church in Corinth. In this letter, Paul addresses various issues and concerns regarding his apostleship and the challenges he faced in his ministry. In chapter 10, Paul defends his authority and speaks about the spiritual warfare faced by believers.
Not exceeding our measure: Paul begins the verse by saying, “For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure.” Here, Paul is referring to the scope of his ministry. He acknowledges that he and his fellow workers did not overstep their boundaries or go beyond the sphere of influence that God had assigned to them. They were not trying to exert authority over areas or churches beyond what God had entrusted to them.
Preaching the gospel of Christ: Paul continues by stating, “for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ.” This highlights the primary focus of Paul’s ministry: preaching the gospel. Despite the challenges and opposition he faced, Paul was faithful in proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ. He had arrived in Corinth to preach the gospel and had established a church there through his extended stay.
Application: There are a few key lessons we can draw from this verse:
Contentment in our assigned role: It is essential for believers to recognize the boundaries of their calling and not strive to exceed them. Each person has a unique role in the body of Christ, and we should find contentment in faithfully fulfilling the tasks and responsibilities assigned to us by God.
Faithfulness in preaching the gospel: Just as Paul prioritized preaching the gospel, we should also be committed to sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with others. Regardless of the challenges and obstacles we may encounter, we should remain faithful in proclaiming the message of salvation.
Humility in ministry: Paul’s statement underscores the importance of humility. Rather than boasting about personal achievements, believers should serve with modesty, acknowledging that any success comes from God’s provision.
Recognizing the sphere of influence: Understanding the sphere of influence helps us focus our efforts effectively. Paul’s intention was not to impose his authority beyond the boundaries God had given him. Similarly, we should recognize our areas of influence, whether it be within our families, communities, or workplaces, and diligently serve in those spheres without trying to exert control over areas beyond our reach.
