2 Corinthians 6:5

In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings;

2 Corinthians 6:5 (KJV)

Paul writes to defend his ministry against critics in Corinth. In this passage, he lists the hardships he and his companions endured as servants of God. The six trials in this verse follow the general afflictions mentioned in verse 4 and serve as concrete evidence of his endurance and commitment to the Gospel.

“In stripes” refers to physical beatings. Paul endured these for the sake of Christ, and he later recounts being beaten with rods and scourged by the Jews (2 Corinthians 11:23-25).

“In imprisonments” points to the many times Paul was arrested and jailed for preaching the Gospel. Even in prison, he continued to share the Good News with fellow prisoners and guards.

“In tumults” means riots or public disturbances. Paul faced opposition from hostile crowds, sometimes forcing him to flee. These situations threatened his safety and well-being.

“In labours” indicates strenuous ministry work, including traveling, preaching, teaching, and establishing churches. Paul also worked with his hands to meet needs, showing his dedication.

“In watchings” refers to sleepless nights spent in labor, preaching, and prayer. Paul remained vigilant against physical and spiritual dangers.

“In fastings” denotes times of hunger and voluntary abstinence. Fasting was a spiritual discipline Paul embraced to draw closer to God, seek guidance, and discipline his body.

This verse demonstrates that authentic Christian ministry is validated through patient endurance of suffering, not through worldly comfort. It aligns with the broader context of commending themselves as ministers of God in all things. Paul’s example encourages believers to remain steadfast, knowing that their labour in the Lord is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).

Paul’s hardships remind us that following Christ may involve trials and opposition. Yet through God’s grace and the Holy Spirit, we can find strength to endure. This verse also emphasizes self-sacrifice and dedication in serving God and others, encouraging us to be willing to make sacrifices for the sake of the Gospel.

Consider how Paul’s example challenges us to persevere in our own walk with Christ. When we face difficulties, we can draw encouragement from his faithfulness and trust that God will sustain us, just as He did for Paul.
