“But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses.”

Context:The book of 2 Corinthians was written by the apostle Paul to the church in Corinth. In this particular passage, Paul is discussing his ministry and the challenges he and his fellow workers faced as they served God. He emphasises the importance of demonstrating godly character and perseverance in the face of various trials and difficulties.

Ministers of God:The verse begins by referring to believers as “ministers of God.” This term applies not only to Paul and his companions but also to all followers of Christ who have been called to serve and represent God in the world. As ministers, we have the responsibility to carry out God’s work and share His message of love, grace, and salvation.

Much Patience:Paul mentions “much patience” as one of the qualities that should characterise ministers of God. Patience is the ability to endure difficult circumstances without losing hope or faith. In ministry, there will be times when we face opposition, criticism, or delays. However, we are called to remain patient, trusting in God’s timing and relying on His strength to sustain us.

Afflictions:The word “afflictions” refers to hardships, troubles, or sufferings that ministers of God may encounter. Paul himself experienced numerous afflictions, including persecution, imprisonment, and physical ailments. As ministers, we should be prepared to face difficulties for the sake of the Gospel, understanding that God can work through our weaknesses and use our trials to strengthen our faith.

Necessities:“Necessities” here refers to the basic needs and requirements of life. As ministers of God, we may encounter times when our resources, provisions, or circumstances are limited. However, even in such situations, we are called to trust in God’s faithfulness and rely on Him to provide for our needs.

Distresses:“Distresses” refer to times of extreme pressure, hardship, or distressing circumstances. These may include situations that cause emotional or mental anguish. As ministers, we may find ourselves facing overwhelming challenges or feeling overwhelmed by the weight of our responsibilities. However, we can find comfort in knowing that God is with us and will never leave us nor forsake us.

Overall, 2 Corinthians 6:4 encourages ministers of God to demonstrate godly character and perseverance in the midst of various trials and challenges. It reminds us that as we serve God, we will face hardships, but through patience, reliance on God’s provision, and trust in His faithfulness, we can endure and continue to be effective ministers of His grace and love.
