2 Kings 11:19
And hee tooke the rulers ouer hundreds, and the captaines, and the guard, and all the people of the land, and they brought downe the king from the house of the Lord, and came by the way of the gate of the guard, to the kings house, and he sate on the throne of the kings. 2 Kings 11:19 (KJV)
This verse is part of the account of the crowning of Joash as king of Judah. Prior to Joash’s reign, his grandmother, Athaliah, had usurped the throne and sought to eliminate the descendants of David’s royal line. However, Joash was hidden by his aunt Jehosheba and her husband, Jehoiada the priest.
God’s preservation of the Davidic line: Despite Athaliah’s efforts to wipe out the royal lineage of David, God providentially ensured the survival of Joash. The Lord had promised David an everlasting dynasty (2 Samuel 7:16), and He remained faithful to His covenant. The preservation of the Davidic line was essential for the fulfillment of God’s ultimate plan of sending the Messiah through David’s lineage.
Jehoiada’s leadership and faithfulness: Jehoiada the priest played a crucial role in protecting and restoring the rightful heir to the throne. He gathered the rulers over hundreds, captains, guards, and people of the land to support Joash’s claim to the kingship. Jehoiada’s actions demonstrate his commitment to God’s appointed king and his faithfulness to the divine covenant.
The legitimate transfer of power: The verse highlights the orderly transfer of power from Athaliah to Joash. After Joash was crowned in the temple, he was brought from the house of the LORD to the king’s house and seated on the throne. This transfer of power occurred through God’s ordained leaders and established order, ensuring a just and righteous reign for Joash.
The role of the temple: The house of the Lord played a significant role in this story. Athaliah’s overthrow and Joash’s coronation took place near the temple in Jerusalem. This setting emphasizes the religious significance of the events and reinforces the connection between the Davidic kingship and the worship of God. The temple served as a central symbol of divine authority and a reminder of God’s covenant with His people.
Foreshadowing of Christ’s reign: This passage can be seen as a foreshadowing of Christ’s kingship. Joash’s restoration to the throne, despite being hidden away, draws parallels to Jesus’ lineage and the fulfillment of God’s promise to David. Jesus, the ultimate descendant of David, was hidden from the world during His infancy and eventually revealed as the rightful King of kings. Like Joash, Jesus’ kingship was established through divine providence and with the ultimate purpose of salvation.
As we study this verse, we see God’s faithfulness, the importance of godly leadership, and the fulfillment of His promises. It encourages us to trust in God’s sovereignty and His ability to work through even the most challenging circumstances to establish His purposes.
