2 Kings 11:20

“And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was in quiet: and they slew Athaliah with the sword beside the king’s house.”

Context:2 Kings 11 describes the rise of Joash as king of Judah and the overthrow of Queen Athaliah. Athaliah was the mother of Ahaziah, the previous king of Judah, who was killed by Jehu as part of God’s judgment on the house of Ahab. After Ahaziah’s death, Athaliah seized power and reigned for six years, during which she attempted to wipe out the royal family of David. However, Joash, the son of Ahaziah, was hidden and preserved by his aunt, Jehosheba, and her husband, Jehoiada the priest.

The verse begins by stating, “And all the people of the land rejoiced.” The people of Judah rejoiced because they witnessed the rightful king, Joash, being established on the throne. This marked the end of Athaliah’s reign, which had been characterised by wickedness and the suppression of the worship of God.

The verse continues, “and the city was in quiet.” The overthrow of Athaliah brought peace and stability to the city of Jerusalem. Athaliah’s reign had been tumultuous and marked by idolatry, but with Joash as king, the city experienced a period of calm and restoration.

The verse concludes with the statement, “and they slew Athaliah with the sword beside the king’s house.” Athaliah, the usurping queen, was executed for her crimes. This act served as a just punishment for her attempts to eliminate the royal line of David and subvert the worship of Yahweh.

Throughout the account, we see how God remained faithful to His promise of preserving the line of David. Despite Athaliah’s efforts to destroy the royal family, God protected Joash and ensured that the rightful heir would ascend the throne.

Athaliah’s reign serves as a reminder of the consequences of wickedness and idolatry. Her oppressive rule and attempts to eradicate the worship of God resulted in unrest and chaos. The removal of Athaliah brought about a period of peace and restoration.

The people’s rejoicing indicates the significance of having a righteous and legitimate ruler. Joash, as the descendant of David, represented the rightful line of kingship and brought stability and godliness back to the kingdom.

This passage demonstrates God’s sovereignty over human events. Despite the evil actions of Athaliah, God orchestrated her downfall and the restoration of the true king. It highlights how God can use human agents to accomplish His purposes and bring about justice.
