2 Kings 11:21

Posted on 18 May at 11:19

Seuen yeeres old was Iehoash when he began to reigne. 2 Kings 11:21 (KJV)

Seven years old

was Jehoash when he began to reign. 2 Kings 11:21 (KJV)

“And Joash reigned forty years in Jerusalem.”

Context: 2 Kings 11 records the account of Athaliah, the wicked queen of Judah, who usurped the throne and killed all the royal heirs except one, Joash (also known as Jehoash). Joash was miraculously rescued and hidden in the temple by his aunt Jehosheba and his husband Jehoiada, the high priest. At the age of seven, Joash was crowned king of Judah, and his reign marked a significant turning point in the history of the kingdom.

God’s Preservation: Despite Athaliah’s attempt to exterminate the royal line, God preserved Joash for a purpose. It highlights God’s faithfulness and His sovereign plan to fulfill His promises. It reminds us that God is in control, even in times of great peril or opposition. He can use unexpected means and individuals to ensure His purposes are accomplished.

God’s Faithfulness to His Covenant: Joash’s ascension to the throne fulfilled God’s covenant with David, ensuring the continuation of the Davidic dynasty (2 Samuel 7:12-16). God’s promises and plans for His people are never thwarted, even in the face of evil and opposition. He remains faithful to His covenant, demonstrating His enduring love and commitment to His chosen people.

The Impact of Godly Influence: Jehoiada’s role in protecting and crowning Joash is a testament to the significant influence of godly individuals. Jehoiada’s commitment to the Lord and his courage to stand against Athaliah’s wickedness were instrumental in preserving the rightful heir to the throne. This emphasizes the importance of godly leadership and the impact it can have on shaping the destiny of a nation and its people. It also encourages believers to be faithful and obedient to God’s call, even in challenging circumstances.

The Potential of Young Leaders: Joash’s ascent to the throne at such a young age highlights the potential and capacity of young leaders in fulfilling God’s purposes. Age is not a limitation when God chooses to use someone. God equips and empowers individuals, regardless of their age or experience, to accomplish His plans. It serves as a reminder that God can use anyone who is willing to submit to His guidance and follow His ways.

Application: Trust in God’s sovereignty: Even in the midst of difficult circumstances, we can trust that God is in control. His plans will not be thwarted. Faithfulness to God’s covenant: Remember that God keeps His promises. We can rely on His faithfulness in every aspect of our lives. Influence and leadership: Recognize the impact of godly influence and leadership. Be committed to serving and leading others in a way that honors God. Embrace your calling: Regardless of age or experience, embrace the calling God has placed on your life. Allow Him to equip and guide you as you pursue His purposes. Remember, God works through people of all ages, and He can use anyone who is willing to follow Him.
