2 Kings 12:21
For Jozachar the son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad the son of Shomer, his servants, smote him, and he died; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.
2 Kings 12:21 (KJV)
Context
Joash, king of Judah, began his reign at age seven under the guidance of the high priest Jehoiada. He repaired the temple and served the Lord faithfully. After Jehoiada died, Joash turned away from God and allowed the people to worship idols. He even ordered the stoning of Zechariah, Jehoiada’s son, who rebuked their idolatry. This verse records the tragic end of that once-faithful king.
Meaning
The verse names the assassins: Jozachar, son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad, son of Shomer. The parallel account in 2 Chronicles 24:26 identifies their mothers as an Ammonitess and a Moabitess, showing that even foreigners in the royal court became instruments of judgment. Joash was buried with his fathers in the city of David, yet 2 Chronicles 24:25 notes he was not placed in the tombs of the kings, a sign of disgrace. His son Amaziah succeeded him, continuing the Davidic line.
Biblical connections
The prophecy in 2 Chronicles 24:20-25 was fulfilled when Joash’s own servants struck him down. His death was a direct consequence of his unfaithfulness and the idolatry he permitted. The preservation of Amaziah shows God’s faithfulness to His covenant with David, even through judgment.
Application
Joash’s life warns that a good start does not guarantee a faithful finish. He depended on Jehoiada’s influence, but when the godly counselor was gone, his true heart was revealed. Believers must cultivate their own devotion to God, not rely solely on others. Turning away from the Lord leads to ruin, but obedience brings security and blessing.
Reflection
Consider the influences that shape your walk with God. Are you building your faith on your own relationship with Him, or are you leaning on someone else’s? Let Joash’s downfall remind you to remain steadfast, for God honors those who honor Him.
