2 Kings 19:6
And Isaiah said vnto them, Thus shal ye say to your master, Thus saith the Lord, Be not afraid of the wordes which thou hast heard, with which the seruants of the king of Assyria haue blasphemed me. 2 Kings 19:6 (KJV)
This verse belongs to the larger narrative of King Hezekiah’s reign in Judah. At this time the mighty Assyrian army, under King Sennacherib, had already overrun many neighboring nations and the northern kingdom of Israel had fallen decades earlier, ceasing to exist as an independent state. The Assyrians laid siege to Judah’s fortified cities and threatened Jerusalem itself. Distressed by the hostile envoys and their blasphemous insults, Hezekiah sent messengers—including Eliakim, Shebna, and the elders—to the prophet Isaiah seeking divine guidance.
Isaiah’s reply, recorded in verse 6, is a message of reassurance and encouragement. He instructs the messengers to tell their master, the king of Assyria: “Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words which thou hast heard, wherein the Assyrians blaspheme us.” The prophet reminds Hezekiah that God is fully aware of the blasphemous words and is capable of dealing with the situation, underscoring the sovereignty and superior power of the God of Israel over any earthly ruler.
From this passage several timeless principles emerge for believers today. First, we are called to trust in God’s sovereignty; when confronted with daunting challenges or powerful enemies, we must remember that God remains in control and His authority surpasses all. Second, we are urged not to fear human words. It is natural to feel intimidated by ridicule or mockery of our faith, yet we should stand firm, finding confidence in the knowledge that God is on our side. Third, the passage affirms confidence in God’s defense. God does not ignore blasphemy or insult; He will respond in His own time and way, defending His name and His people.
Ultimately, the verse encourages believers to maintain steadfast trust and faith in God’s promises even amid adversity. By relying on His strength and seeking His guidance, we can face threats and challenges without fear, assured that the Almighty God watches over His people.
