2 Kings 20:11

And Isaiah the prophet cried unto the Lord: and he brought the shadow ten degrees backward, by which it had gone down in the dial of Ahaz.

2 Kings 20:11 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the story of King Hezekiah’s illness and recovery. Hezekiah ruled Judah as a faithful king who trusted God and carried out religious reforms. When Isaiah told him he would die, Hezekiah prayed earnestly, and God promised to heal him and add fifteen years to his life. As a sign, Isaiah offered to make the shadow on the dial of Ahaz move forward or backward ten degrees. Hezekiah chose the harder sign, that the shadow should return backward. Isaiah then cried to the Lord, and God brought the shadow ten degrees backward.

The “dial of Ahaz” was a time-measuring device associated with Hezekiah’s father. The sign showed God’s power over time and creation. He reversed the shadow, proving that He is sovereign over the natural order. This miracle confirmed that God’s promise of healing was true. It was not a display for curiosity but a deliberate confirmation of His word to the king.

The parallel account in Isaiah 38:8 records the same event, confirming its historical reliability. Both passages emphasize that the sign was given because God Himself offered it, and Hezekiah wisely accepted it. The miracle points to God’s authority over all things, including the sun and the measurement of time.

This account teaches that prayer is powerful. Hezekiah’s heartfelt cry brought a divine response, and believers are encouraged to seek God earnestly in distress. It also shows that God is faithful to His promises. He kept His word to Hezekiah, and He will keep His promises to His people. When God offers a sign or confirmation, it is appropriate to receive it with trust, not doubt.

God’s grace is evident in this miracle. He extended the king’s life and gave a visible sign of His compassion. The reversal of the shadow reminds us that nothing is impossible for God. He can change circumstances, restore hope, and intervene in every area of life. Believers can approach Him with confidence, knowing that He hears prayer and acts according to His perfect will.
