2 Kings 6:6
And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did swim.
2 Kings 6:6 (KJV)
Context
This event takes place during Elisha’s prophetic ministry in Israel, after Elijah was taken up to heaven. A company of prophets, often called the sons of the prophets, asked Elisha for permission to build a larger place to live near the Jordan River. While they were cutting trees, one man’s borrowed iron axe head fell into the water. He was troubled because the tool was not his own, and he cried out to Elisha for help.
Elisha asked where the axe head had fallen, and the man showed him the exact place. Then Elisha cut down a stick, threw it into the water at that spot, and the iron floated to the surface. This miracle is part of a larger account in 2 Kings 6:1-7, which shows God’s care for those who serve Him in daily work.
Meaning
The man of God did not simply command the iron to rise. He first asked for the location, and the man pointed to the place. This detail shows that Elisha acted with purpose and that the miracle happened at the precise spot of loss. The stick was a simple tool, yet God used it to reverse the natural order. Iron is heavier than water, so it should sink. By making it float, God displayed His power over creation.
The miracle also reveals God’s attention to small needs. A lost axe head may seem minor, but it mattered to the man who had borrowed it. God cared about that practical problem and answered through His prophet. This teaches that no concern is too small for God, and He is willing to help His people in ordinary situations.
Biblical connections
This miracle resembles another act of God’s provision through Elisha. In 2 Kings 4:1-7, Elisha helped a widow by multiplying a small amount of oil to pay her debt. Both accounts show God meeting practical needs through miraculous means. The recovery of the axe head also points to God’s ability to restore what is lost, just as He restores hope and provision to those who trust Him.
Application
Believers can bring their losses and worries to God, even those that seem small. The man did not hide his mistake; he told Elisha and asked for help. Honesty and humility open the way for God’s intervention. When we face a problem, we can pray and trust that God knows the exact place of our need.
This account also encourages responsible care for what is borrowed or entrusted to us. The man’s distress shows that he valued the tool and respected its owner. Christians are called to be faithful stewards of what God gives, whether possessions, time, or talents. When we fail, God’s grace is available to help us recover and move forward.
Reflection
God’s power is not limited by natural laws or human circumstances. The same God who made iron float can work in our lives in unexpected ways. He sees our daily struggles and cares for us as His children. This miracle invites us to trust that God is near, ready to help in every situation, and able to turn loss into recovery.
