2 Kings Chapter 2

Summery

2 Kings 2 recounts the transition of leadership from the prophet Elijah to his disciple Elisha. As the time approaches for Elijah to be taken up to heaven, he and Elisha journey from Gilgal to Bethel, Jericho, and the Jordan River. At each location, the sons of the prophets remind Elisha of Elijah's imminent departure, but he remains steadfast in his loyalty to his mentor.

Upon reaching the Jordan, Elijah strikes the water with his mantle, causing it to part, and they cross over on dry ground. Knowing that his time on earth is coming to an end, Elijah asks Elisha what he can do for him before he is taken away. Elisha requests a double portion of Elijah's spirit, which the latter promises will be granted if Elisha witnesses his departure.

Suddenly, a chariot of fire and horses of fire appear, separating Elijah and Elisha. As Elijah ascends to heaven in a whirlwind, Elisha cries out in despair. He then picks up Elijah's mantle, returns to the Jordan, and strikes the water, causing it to part once again.

The sons of the prophets, who had been watching from a distance, recognize that the spirit of Elijah rests upon Elisha. They bow before him, acknowledging him as their new leader, and Elisha performs his first miracle by healing the waters of Jericho.
