2 Peter 1:14

Knowing that shortly I must put off this my Tabernacle, euen as our Lord Iesus Christ hath shewed mee. 2 Peter 1:14 (KJV)

The book of 2 Peter is traditionally ascribed to the apostle Peter and is addressed to believers to strengthen their faith and to warn them about false teachers. In this opening of chapter 1, Peter declares, “Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.” The language of a “tabernacle” or temporary dwelling points to the fleeting nature of the physical body. Peter is aware that his earthly life is about to end, and he attributes this knowledge to the revelation given by the Lord.

Peter’s certainty of death is rooted in the promise recorded in the Gospel of John (21:18‑19), where Jesus foretold that Peter would face martyrdom. The tradition that he was later killed by crucifixion confirms the fulfillment of that prophecy. By acknowledging that his “tabernacle” will be taken away, Peter underscores the transience of human existence and the need to view life through an eternal perspective.

This awareness should motivate believers to live purposefully. The briefness of our time on earth calls us to prioritize eternal matters over worldly concerns, to use each day with urgency, and to invest in what has lasting value. Peter’s own example—remaining faithful to his mission, continuing to serve and teach the early church despite the imminent danger—demonstrates steadfast dedication to Christ.

Application flows naturally from the passage.

First, our physical bodies are temporary; our true home is with the Lord. Second, the knowledge of life’s brevity should spur us to live each day wisely, focusing on the gospel and the hope of resurrection promised by Jesus. Finally, we are called to remain faithful even amid difficulty and the certainty of death, trusting in the hope of eternal life. In sum, 2 Peter 1:14 reminds us of life’s brevity and the importance of unwavering faithfulness to God.
