2 Peter 1:15
Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.
2 Peter 1:15 (KJV)
Context
The book of 2 Peter is attributed to the apostle Peter, who wrote it as his second letter to the early Christian church. This letter serves as a reminder of the truths and teachings of the apostles and warns against false teachings and immoral behaviour. In the preceding verses, Peter states that he intends to keep reminding his readers of these things while he lives, knowing that he must soon put off his earthly body, as the Lord Jesus Christ had shown him. In 2 Peter 1:15, Peter expresses his determination to ensure that the recipients of his letter would remember and hold onto the teachings even after his death.
Meaning
Peter’s use of the word “endeavour” reflects his strong commitment and effort. Despite knowing that his earthly life is limited, he is determined to fulfil his responsibility as an apostle to strengthen the faith of the believers. Peter’s desire is for the recipients of his letter, the believers, to possess the ability or capability to remember the teachings. He wants them to be equipped with the knowledge and understanding necessary to hold firm to their faith in the face of challenges and false teachings.
Peter acknowledges his own mortality and the certainty of his impending death. By mentioning his death, he emphasises the urgency of his message and the importance of preserving the apostolic teachings. The phrase “after my decease” refers to his departure from this world by death, and some commentators see an allusion to the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt, picturing this world as a place of pilgrimage toward the promised inheritance.
The purpose of Peter’s endeavour is to ensure that the teachings of the apostles remain alive in the hearts and minds of the believers even after he is gone. Peter recognises the value of retaining the truths of the Gospel, the teachings of Jesus, and the apostolic instructions as a source of guidance, encouragement, and spiritual growth. His solution was to put these reminders and admonitions in writing, so that even after he was gone, believers could read them and benefit.
Application
2 Peter 1:15 highlights Peter’s commitment to preserving the teachings of the apostles and his concern for the spiritual well-being of the early Christian community. It emphasises the importance of remembering and passing on the truths of the Gospel from one generation to another, ensuring the continuity of faith and the perseverance of believers. This verse encourages us to value and cherish the teachings of Scripture and to actively pass them on to future generations, safeguarding the unchanging truths of God’s Word.
Reflection
Peter’s example challenges us to consider how we can help others remember and hold fast to the faith, even when we are no longer present. Writing down what we have learned, teaching others, and modelling faithful living are practical ways to ensure that the truth continues beyond our own lifetime.
