2 Peter 1:17

For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

2 Peter 1:17 (KJV)

The Apostle Peter wrote this second letter to encourage believers and strengthen their faith, particularly in the face of false teachers. In the preceding verses, he urges growth in the knowledge of God and godly living, and he speaks of his impending death as a way of reminding the believers of essential truths they must remember.

This verse points directly to the Transfiguration, an event Peter himself witnessed. Matthew 17:1-8, Mark 9:2-8, and Luke 9:28-36 record how Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain, where His face shone like the sun and His clothes became white as light. Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with Him, and a bright cloud overshadowed them. From that cloud, the Father’s voice declared, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!“

Peter describes what Jesus “received from God the Father” as “honour and glory.” The voice from the “excellent glory“—the majestic, radiant presence of God, often associated with the Shekinah glory—bestowed divine approval upon the Son. This was not a private moment; Peter, James, and John heard it and became eyewitnesses of Christ’s majesty.

The phrase “my beloved Son” affirms Jesus’ unique relationship with the Father. The Father’s declaration “in whom I am well pleased” expresses His complete delight and approval. This divine endorsement confirmed Jesus’ identity, His divine nature, and the authority of His teaching. It also fulfilled Old Testament expectations of the coming Messiah and set Jesus apart as the one to whom believers must listen.

The voice at the Transfiguration echoes the Father’s words at Jesus’ baptism in Matthew 3:17, yet it came at a distinct moment, from the cloud on the mountain, and was heard by the apostles. In 2 Peter 1:16-18, Peter uses this event to ground the apostles’ testimony in what they personally saw and heard. The honor and glory Jesus received point to His divine majesty and give believers a firm foundation for trusting His words.

This verse calls believers to recognize the greatness and glory of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Because the Father honored Him and was well pleased with Him, we are compelled to listen to His teachings and follow His example. Just as God delighted in His Son, we are invited to please God by aligning our lives with His will and living in obedience to His Word. The Father’s voice from the mountain still directs our attention to Jesus, the one who is worthy of our trust and devotion.

The Transfiguration gave Peter a lasting vision of Christ’s glory. That same glory, revealed in Scripture, strengthens our faith today. When we are tempted to doubt, we can remember that the Father Himself testified to His Son, and we can rest in the certainty of who Jesus is and what He has done.
