2 Peter 1:21
For the prophecie came not in olde time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moued by the holy Ghost. 2 Peter 1:21 (KJV)
Traditionally the book of 2 Peter has been attributed to the apostle Peter, although many scholars regard its authorship as uncertain and its date as unclear. The letter was written to encourage and exhort believers, and in this verse Peter addresses the authority and origin of prophecy.
The term “prophecy” denotes divine revelation and the communication of God’s will and purpose to His people. In the Old Testament prophets were chosen and anointed by God to convey His messages to Israel.
Peter stresses that prophecy did not arise from human will or imagination. It was not a product of man’s invention but originated directly from God Himself.
The verse explains that holy men of God were the channels through which prophecy was delivered. These individuals were set apart for God’s purposes, lived in close relationship with Him, and were guided by His Spirit.
They spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost, meaning the Spirit of God inspired and directed their words. The Holy Spirit imparted divine wisdom, understanding, and insight, enabling the prophets to convey God’s will accurately.
Thus the passage affirms the divine origin and authority of prophecy. The words of the prophets are not merely their own ideas but are divinely inspired through the work of the Holy Spirit.
For believers this truth calls us to recognize and respect the authority of Scripture, including its prophetic messages. We are urged to approach the Bible with reverence and to seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance in understanding and applying its teachings to our lives.
