2 Peter 2:6

Posted on 18 May at 11:41

“And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes, condemned them with an overthrow, making them an example unto those that after should live ungodly.”

Historical Context:The book of 2 Peter is attributed to the apostle Peter, who wrote it near the end of his life to address various concerns and issues within the early Christian community. In this particular passage, Peter refers to the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, as recorded in the book of Genesis (Genesis 19).

  • Sodom and Gomorrha:

Sodom and Gomorrah were cities situated in the plain of the Jordan, known for their widespread wickedness and depravity. The Lord decided to destroy these cities due to their extreme sinfulness. Abraham interceded on behalf of the cities, but ultimately, God destroyed them with fire and brimstone.

Condemnation of the Ungodly:In 2 Peter 2:6, Peter uses the example of Sodom and Gomorrah to illustrate God’s judgment on the ungodly. The cities’ destruction serves as a powerful warning and “ensample” (or example) to those who would live ungodly lives in the future. It highlights the consequences of unrepentant sin and the certainty of God’s judgment.

The Importance of God’s Justice:This passage underscores the justice of God. The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah reveals God’s intolerance toward ungodliness and wickedness. It reminds believers that God is righteous and will ultimately bring judgment on those who persist in unrepentant sin.

A Call to Godly Living:By referring to Sodom and Gomorrah, Peter urges his readers to live godly lives. The destruction of these cities serves as a reminder that God is not indifferent to sin but acts decisively against it. Christians are encouraged to learn from the past and avoid falling into the same patterns of ungodliness.

Application for Today:Though this passage refers to an event from the past, its message is relevant for believers today. It emphasizes the importance of pursuing a life of holiness, avoiding ungodliness, and turning away from sin. It also assures believers that God’s judgment will ultimately prevail, providing comfort to those who have been oppressed or persecuted for their faith.

In summary, 2 Peter 2:6 reminds us of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and the consequences of ungodliness. It serves as a warning and a call to live godly lives, while also highlighting God’s justice and His ultimate judgment on unrepentant sin.
