2 Peter 2:7
And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:
2 Peter 2:7 (KJV)
Context
Peter wrote this letter to warn early Christians about false teachers and immoral behavior that could lead them astray. In the preceding verses, he recounts how God did not spare the angels who sinned or the ancient world, but brought judgment upon them, emphasizing that God knows how to rescue the godly from trials while punishing the wicked (2 Peter 2:4-6). Then, in verse 7, Peter provides an Old Testament example to illustrate his point.
Meaning
The verse refers to Lot, the nephew of Abraham, who had settled in the wicked city of Sodom. Despite being a righteous man, Lot was vexed—worn down and distressed—by the filthy conversation, or unrestrained, sensual, and lawless behavior, of the people around him. The Greek word translated “vexed” (kataponeo) conveys being oppressed and troubled. Lot is called “just” because he preserved himself uncontaminated amidst the surrounding wickedness; as long as he lived in Sodom, he maintained his righteousness. God delivered Lot from the destruction of Sodom, accomplished by angels (Genesis 19:16-17), showing that He makes a distinction between the righteous and the wicked.
Biblical connections
The example of Lot illustrates that God rescues the godly from trials and judgment, a theme Peter continues in 2 Peter 2:9. The story of Lot also connects to Genesis 19, where God’s judgment on Sodom and Gomorrah is recorded.
Application
God’s Judgment: The verse highlights God’s judgment upon the wicked. Although He did not spare the sinful cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, God delivered Lot and his family from destruction. This emphasizes God’s ability to rescue the righteous while judging the ungodly.
Impact of Immorality: The verse also emphasizes the negative influence of immorality and wickedness on righteous individuals. Lot, though righteous, was affected by the wickedness surrounding him. It serves as a reminder to believers to be cautious of their environment and the company they keep.
God’s Faithfulness: Despite the challenges and temptations that Lot faced in Sodom, God remained faithful to him and rescued him from the impending judgment. This showcases God’s faithfulness and protection towards His people even in the midst of a sinful world.
Avoidance of Evil Influences: As believers, we should strive to distance ourselves from wickedness and immoral behavior. Lot’s example teaches us to be mindful of the influence of our surroundings and to make choices that align with God’s standards.
God’s Deliverance: Just as God delivered Lot from the destruction of Sodom, we can trust in God’s faithfulness to protect and deliver us from trials and temptations. This should encourage us to remain faithful to God even in challenging circumstances.
Prayer for the Wicked: While we are to distance ourselves from wickedness, we should also pray for the salvation and transformation of those engaged in sinful behavior. God’s desire is for all to come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9), and our prayers can play a role in that process.
Reflection
This verse reminds us that God sees the distress of the righteous and delivers them. Even when we are surrounded by wickedness, we can trust that God knows how to rescue us from trials and judgment. Let us remain faithful, avoid evil influences, and pray for those who are lost, knowing that God is faithful to His people.
