2 Peter 3:17

Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.

Context

This verse is the concluding warning of Peter’s second letter. It follows his discussion of the coming day of the Lord and the danger of false teachers who twist the Scriptures. Peter has already reminded believers of God’s promise of judgement on the ungodly and the future renewal of the heavens and the earth.

Meaning

Peter addresses his readers as “beloved,” showing his affection and concern for their spiritual well-being. This address frames the entire warning as an act of love, not mere admonishment. He reminds them that they “know these things before”—they have been forewarned about the coming mockers and the unstable men who distort the Scriptures. This prior knowledge is not passive; it is the basis for the command to “beware.”

The central warning is twofold: first, that believers might be “led away with the error of the wicked,” and second, that they might “fall from [their] own stedfastness.” The “error of the wicked” refers to the destructive false teaching and lawless behaviour described earlier in the chapter. The danger is that believers, despite their knowledge, could be carried away by this error and lose their firm grip on the truth.

Stedfastness means being firmly established and grounded in the truth of God’s Word. It implies a state of faithfulness, consistency, and perseverance. Falling from stedfastness means drifting away from the truth, losing one’s spiritual foundation, and becoming vulnerable to false teachings and worldly influences. The warning is not that believers will lose their salvation, but that they can lose their stability and firmness in the faith if they are not on guard.

Application

This verse serves as a warning to believers throughout history, including us today. It reminds us to remain vigilant, discerning, and rooted in the truth of God’s Word. We need to be aware of false teachings, deceptive ideologies, and worldly influences that can lead us astray. It is essential to continually grow in our understanding of Scripture, seek wisdom from God, and rely on the Holy Spirit’s guidance to stay firm in our faith.

Peter’s command is to be watchful and diligent, using the knowledge we have been given to protect ourselves from being deceived and led astray. The verse emphasises that steadfastness is something believers possess and are responsible to guard.
